An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships last for three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. And those with master's degrees made around $32,000 per year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
