They must also be able to understand how various parts interact with each other.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you choose to work at a store, you need to join a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

If you decide to open your own garage, you'll need to register with the government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

You should also expect to earn lower wages than if you were employed at a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

It's not always easy to find a job. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

Automotive technicians provide repair and maintenance services to vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. And those with master's degrees made around $32,000 per year. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
